Default Adjusting Header Space and Counter-adjusting another space setting to ensure identical page content

Good morning (at least here it is morning),

I need to adjust the header spacing from the top of my document's pages to 0.49" from its current 0.35". The problem, though, is that I cannot have the page content change at all, that is text cannot be be pushed to a subsequent page once the change is applied to the document. I do not have footers in the document so I can't offset the header space by the footer space. I tried shortening the bottom margin by the same amount (0.14") that is added to the header space but page content still shifts.

Is there a way to apply this increase in header space while not changing the page content of the document?

Not really, at least not while maintaining Word's normal editing flow.

You could try reducing your line spacing, space between paragraphs, or font size.

This will make future editing a real nightmare.

That 'at all' stipulation is unrealistic. If you increase the space for the header, everything else has to give.

You can achieve that much by adjusting the footer and/or bottom margin.

Yes, it will shift - by the 0.14". However, because Word uses data from the active printer to determine the page layout, that could still change the pagination, so you might need to adjust the bottom margin heuristically by a different amount.

Thanks guys. I ended up changing the header space to 0.45" instead of 0.49" and then went manually through a section by section comparison against the older document to ensure the page content was the same, which demanded a number of line spacing and subtle blank-space font size changes as the header change could not be offset by any other margin-dimension modifications (there are no footers in the document).

The reason I had to do this is because two indices were generated on the older document assuming the header was fine - one index generated through the use of a Word add-in that required, since it is finicky, hundreds of references to be manually checked for accuracy. If page content changed we would have had to have gone through the process of checking each returned index reference again.

In any event, the header space modification and subsequent page-content corrections only took 3.5 hours. :-)
