How do I stop all minimized windows from opening

If I have multiple word documents minimized, when ever I go to open a single additional Word Doc. all the minimized docs I have minimized open on the desktop and completely clutter it. Then I have to go through each one and re- minimize it. Is there a way to prevent this from happening,. It is extremely annoying
