Default Numbering a part of the headings

Hi, in a report it is common to number only the chapters that are the core of the text.

Of course I can create two styles of Heading 1, one numbered and one not.

Also I can manually delete the numbering in some headings.

Which way is preferred (using Word 2013). or is there a better way?

Thanks, Daan

I do not fully understand your question. If you have two different, if similar, formats, it is good to use different styles for them. Perhaps you would want one based on the other.

Is there a reason why you are not using Heading 1 for the main chapter headings and then Heading 2 for the lower level?

If you are saying that some headings should be unnumbered (such as "Introduction" or "References"), I recommend that you apply an unnumbered style to those heading paragraphs.
