Default The citations in my doc are all static text and not linked to the sources

The citations in my doc are all static text and not linked to the sources. How do I change this so that they are? I have only just started the doc so don't need to change any past entries, just need to alter the set-up. Each time I go to enter a reference, it simply appears as static text. Likewise, when I create a bibliography, it immediately appears as static text (i.e. there is no update option).

Thanks

If the document has been opened & saved in Word 2003 or earlier, or if it is saved in the .doc format rather than in the docx or docm formats, all citations & bibliographies will be converted to static text. Unless you've disabled it, the compatibility checker will warn you of the latter.

I have just saved it as a .docx and still the reference function doesn't work properly. How can I enable linked citations so they are not produced as static text? Many thanks for your help.

Simply re-saving in the docx format a document that had been saved in the doc format won't restore the citations & bibliography - they'll have been converted to static text and will now have to be recreated. Thankfully, though, when you create a reference entry, Word stores a copy in another file, so you won't have to recreate the actual references; you can simply copy them from the master list back into your document.

Hi sorry I though I had edited the response - the function is now working fine. I didn't have any past citations to convert, just needed it working for future ones. Thanks so much for your help!
