Insert a cross-reference in a caption
Hi all.
I need your help to create a complex caption in Word. I have a list of equations into a table. This table has a caption (Tab.1) and I would like to insert a cross-reference to this caption into the caption of each equation such that I have: Tab.1 Eqn. 1, Tab.1 Eqn. 2, Tab.1 Eqn. 3... I don't know how to deal with that. Could you help me please? Thanks |

It would help if you attached a document to a post showing what you want to achieve. You can attach files to a post via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Thank you for your answer macropod.
You will find attached, an example of what I want |

See attached. I defined new captions (Tab & Eqn), added a Tab Caption, then an Eqn Caption. I then dragged these Caption into their cells and inserted a cross-reference to the Tab Caption before the Eqn Caption. Finally, I inserted a cross-reference to the Eqn Caption to the paragraph above the table.

Hi
Thank you very much. That's what I was looking for ! I'm just surprised that the cross-reference into the paragraph includes the cross reference to the Table Bye and thanks again |

Oups, I think that I closed the thread too early.
Assume that I have a 2nd Table. How could I define a new Equation 1 in this Table2? |

If you want the re-start the Eqn # sequence in Table 2, insert the caption as per normal, then select it and press Shift-F9. You should see: {SEQ Eqn \* Arabic}. Edit this so you get {SEQ Eqn \r 1 \* Arabic}, then press F9 to update the field.
Note: Messing around with caption numbering this way might make it harder for you to figure out which one to cross-reference from elsewhere in the document.

So, I'm a little bit confused...what's the best way to number Equations in different tables in order to insert cross-refrences in a text that look like: Tab.1 Eqn. 1, Tab.1 Eqn. 2, Tab.2 Eqn. 1, Tab.2 Eqn. 2... |

Word's captioning isn't designed to work the way you seem to want it to. The nearest you can get to doing that reliably would be to forego the use of Word's captions and assign heading Styles for use with the Tables and Equations (e.g. Table = Heading 8, Equation - Heading 9), with numbering the one used for the table unlinked from the other heading Styles and only set to include the multi-level list numbering for its own level and the multi-level list numbering for the Equations to re-set on each change in the Table numbering. You can prefix the numbering for each as Tbl and Eqn, respectively, so they should still look much the same as captions, but with the numbering setup you're after.

I assigned the heading style 9 to the Table caption and set to this heading a numbering list for which I hid the font (font properties of my numbering list). This latter point allowed me to only display "Table 1" in the caption while in reality it's "1- Table 1". After having done this, I created a new caption ("Eqn T") for my equations and include the chapter number that I have set to heading 9. This generated a caption like : Eqn T1.1 It's a little hack, tedious to defined the first time. But once created, it's seems easy to and fast to use |
