That's exactly what I tried yesterday ! but in a different way than you.

I assigned the heading style 9 to the Table caption and set to this heading a numbering list for which I hid the font (font properties of my numbering list). This latter point allowed me to only display "Table 1" in the caption while in reality it's "1- Table 1".
After having done this, I created a new caption ("Eqn T") for my equations and include the chapter number that I have set to heading 9.
This generated a caption like : Eqn T1.1

It's a little hack, tedious to defined the first time. But once created, it's seems easy to and fast to use
