Default

Here's how to modify List Number: In the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S), type in List Number. Click the Apply button. Word adds the number formatting to text. Click the actual list number so that Word selects it. Right-click and choose Adjust List Indents. Change "Follow number with" to "Space" and make any other modifications that you want. Click OK when you are done. This updates the style.

To transfer the settings to your template, do the following: Press Ctrl+Shift+S again to activate the Apply Styles pane. Click Modify. In the Modify Style dialog box, select "New documents based on this template" and click OK.

Later, if/when you are prompted to save the template, choose to do so.
