Default Word 2013 for Windows and Mac updates date every day, why?

Hi,
When I enter a date in Word for mac at work I'm careful to check the "update automatically" checkbox isn't marked. I check every couple of days that dates haven't been annoyingly updated to the "today" date in the mac.

At home I have Word 2013 and also, when I enter a date I check "update automatically" checkbox isn't active.
Surprisingly, today I noticed all my dates have been updated to "today" again!.

Note: Sometimes the word document at home with windows 8 and word 2013 asks me to update to the newer docx format and I answer yes. May this have something to do with this?

That's because you're using a DATE field, and those update regardless of the "update automatically" setting. Instead of using a DATE field, you might consider a:
• CREATEDATE field, which updates only when the document is first created or is subsequently saved via Save As;
• PRINTDATE field, which updates only when the document is printed; or
• SAVEDATE field, which updates only when the document is saved.
Alternatively, you could lock the problem field or convert it to text.

Thanks for your answer. I guess I'll just add a space to the date right after inserting it, this will destroy the field a guess. I don't want it updated at all, I need to simply record the date I did something. I wonder why word works so badly for this.

Perhaps you'd care to explain how you're inserting the dates? Simply typing one doesn't produce a field - and the date static - even if you use Word's date helper.

In Word for Mac: either Ctrl+Caps+D or Insert > Date if my memory is right

Using Word on a PC:
• Alt-Shift-D inserts a DATE field; such fields auto-update.
• Insert > Date & Time inserts a static date, unless you check the 'update automatically' option - which inserts a DATE field.
• typing part of a date, then pressing <Enter> when the date pop-up displays, inserts a static date.

Thanks for your answer.
What I'm doing lately to avoid updating is using Alt-Shift-D then introducing a space between the month and then year, thus breaking the field, it's a little faster.
Good to know, thanks again.
