Default Keep heading with graphic and text that follows?

I am using Word 2010 on a Windows 7, 64 bit system.

This is what I need:

Heading

[½" graphic] Text that wraps tightly around the ½" x ½" graphic.

The ½" graphic is the recommended duration estimate for the section. A graphic like that will follow every heading in a training guide. For example [30] means: 30 minutes.

The heading must stay on the same page with the small graphic and text that follows. The heading and the graphic/text need to be able to float up and down on any page.

I do *not* want to have to put the heading, the small graphic, and the adjacent text in a one-celled table or frame.

This is what does *not* work:

Setting the paragraph on the heading to any combination of Window/Orphan control, Keep with next, and Keep lines together. (I think those controls work with text only, not with graphics.)

Changing the text wrapping or position settings for the graphic also do not appear to work.

Does anyone know how to keep the heading with the graphic/text of the first paragraph that follows?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

If the graphic is in-line with text, the paragraph setting for the heading of keep with next combined with keep lines together for the following text will work.

Having the heading (keep with next) followed by the graphic and accompanying text in a two-cell table set to not wrap/split should also work.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If I select the in-line option for the graphic, the bottom of the first line of text falls to the same position as the bottom of the graphic. I need the top of the first line of text to be even with the top of the ½" graphic.

As I mentioned in the original post, for internal work reasons I do not want to put anything in a table.

Thanks again.

You can anchor a floating graphic to certain text. If you anchor to the accompanying text and apply the "keep with next" to the heading and "keep lines together" to the accompanying text it should work. I haven't tried.

To use anchoring to text effectively, you would want your display options set to show object anchors.

Worth trying Charles, but it did not work.

I selected Lock anchor on the Layout window for the graphic, and then verified that the heading had the following selected on the Line and Page Breaks tab on the Paragraph window: Widow/Orphan control, Keep with next, and Keep lines together.

The heading was still stranded by itself on the previous page.

I confirm your findings. This is true even if I anchor to the heading paragraph. I don't know of any way, then, to do what you want without a table.

I had a look at this on Word 2013 and it appeared to work for me. Perhaps your styles are not defined the same way as my document.

Can you post a sample document that I can test on.

Here's the one I was working with...
See what happens if you delete the graphic.
Heading 1 - set to keep with next.
Following text - set to keep lines together.
Graphic inserted as floating at beginning of following text. Heading moves to previous page bottom. This is true if graphic is inserted anywhere in following text paragraph.

Oops. Works fine in Word 2013, but not in Word 2010 - or in Word 2013 with document in Word 2010 compatibility mode! Must be the change in the "text rendering engine" that MS uses as an excuse for the text boundaries problems in Word 2013.

I have posted my notes on this phenomenon on the Microsoft Word Answers forum in this thread. Here is a picture of what I observe in Word 2010 but not in Word 2013.

TimMun: Although I understand that you don't want to put the graphic in a table cell, that does work. See attached.

I want to express my gratitude for everyone who responded.

Just as a quick follow-up:

1. I needed it to work in Word 2010. (Although I hear we will all be upgraded to 2013 soon.)

2. I did not want to put a few paragraphs in a table. (The document will serve as a template for people whose first language is not English, and they are somewhat unfamiliar with Word. So, there is somewhat of a language barrier, and somewhat of a tool barrier. It needs to be automatic.)

I will wait for the 2013 roll-out and then proceed as many of you have suggested.

Thanks again!

And there's no need to. As the attachment to my last post shows, the only thing that needs to be in a table for this to work with Word 2010 is the graphic itself.

I had envisioned a two-column table, but this is much better. It is a Floating Table set to wrap.
