I can't insert a Table of Contents in Word 2010, the tab is greyed out.
I can't insert a Table of Contents in Word 2010, when I go to RERERENCES, I can see other tabs such as Table of authorities, but the Table of Contents tab is greyed out.

What file format is the problem file? The available options are a bit different in the older (*.doc) format. Also, you may not be able to insert a TOC into any location in the document.
If you click in the main body of the document, can you then click References | Table of Contents | Custom Table of Contents?
