Documentation on how Word generates the Font list?

Hello! Thanks a million in advance for any help.



I was recently hired in IT/Data for a small lettershop & mailing firm.

I've been tasked with understanding the logic by which Windows, MS Office & InDesign group installed fonts (by typeface/family/style etc).

I'm having zero luck googling, so I figured I'd ask here!

There's plenty on font standards, but nothing on how exactly Windows/Office/Adobe interpret their metadata to create a font list for the user.

Any help would be great, need to develop a professional understanding of this and I'm having a hard time even getting off the ground!
