Default Adding spaces only between each main bullet point

Hi there,
I am currently using Word 2010/2013 and still cannot figure out how to do this, other than manually pressing enter after each main bullet point.
This is the original list:

And this is the desired result:

I read some blogs and it says to “add space before/after paragraph”. After highlighting the entire list and selecting the option, I got this result instead.

I only want spacing between each MAIN point, and not between all the sub points as well. How can I achieve this easily? Thanks!

The simplest solution is to add a line break before each number change

Graham's work-around is the quickest.

Otherwise, set up your numbering attached to styles as described at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. Then use space-before formatting for your top-level heading.

Note, you can modify the styles so that except for the numbering (and this spacing) the formatting is the same. You can set the default for the top-level so that when you press Enter, it will automatically produce level 2.
