Table of contents vs headings: what style settings need to be changed?
Hey, attached below is my table of contents. 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 all use the same style, but 2.5 results has the page number in a different spot. What do I need to change? |

This is more than you asked for but, here are some links that will tell you all you need to know about the TOC for Word (provided by Charles Kenyon in another thread):

The odd page number position is most likely caused by a 'Jason tab' so Jim's references are not going to directly address the problem.
The Jason tab (named after a horror movie character that never dies) is a tab that gets inserted by Word into each line of a TOC every time the TOC is updated. It is usually unnoticed except on lines where the text is short enough that it comes into play. Assuming your TOC styles don't include that tab themselves, you can remove all the jason tabs by selecting the TOC and pressing Ctrl-Q to clear any local paragraph formatting. Unfortunately, this needs to be done every time you update the TOC. You can also automate this with a macro if you prefer. Some references that address this issue can be found through a Google search but here are a few http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/format...CJasonTabs.htm https://cybertext.wordpress.com/2010...-tab-in-a-toc/

Never heard of the Jason tab until this post! Good to know! I'll have to read into this more. (Wish there was a "Like" key here.)

Most likely, the page number goes to a default tab stop (because the TOC entry is "too short"). What you should do is explicitly add a right-aligned tab stop for the page number at the right margin. Also, be sure to clear any custom tab stops set before the end of the text in the affected entry. Doing this once would suffice, because the TOC styles are set to automatically update. See http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/format...CJasonTabs.htm.
