Word 2013 Spell Check Keeps Using Wrong Languae
Hi All
In newly created files (and it seems to be any template normal or one of my own) when I go to spell check it, Word 2013 will, it seem randomly, decide to do it using French or Spanish dictionaries. It can happen anytime, at the beginning of a spell check in a file or half way through a check. The annoying thing is it is not consistent I cant seem to get a handle on what is causing it. I have checked in file/options/language and English United Kingdom is the default language chosen, I have checked al the other languages and they are not installed at all. Anyone any ideas? Thanks |

First, turn OFF "automatically detect language."
The language setting for text is character-level, like bold or Italic. It is possible to have multiple settings on the same page or in the same paragraph. Mastering the Spelling Checker When you copy text, it brings its language setting with it. Try Ctrl+A and then under the Review tab, click on the Language button and pick the correct language. |

Many thanks for your reply. Where would I find "automatically detect language."? Looked in options and can’t see it.
The Mastering Spell Checker link was interesting, but nothing in there to help me. I will try the Ctrl+A method you mention, which will most probably work, but I am really after a long term fix, rather than having to faff after completing a file. I spend half my time in Word copy and pasting text from file to file, I have a macro written which pastes anything in the same formatting as it is being pasted into, if you see what I mean. |

The thing is, the language setting is like font formatting that you can't see, but the spelling checker does see it. When you paste text, it carries this attribute with it. I don't know if even pasting as plain text strips it.
Everything to help you is in Mastering the Spell Checker. Except perhaps: Turn-on-automatic-language-options With Automatic language detection turned on, Word sometimes erroneously identifies something as being in a different language. You may want to adjust your macro to set the language for the pasted material. |
