Word does not update NUMPAGES when multiple master pages are used
I have a document with 2 pages. I've set fields {PAGES} and {NUMPAGES} in the footer section and then unlink the same as previous in the second page footer section. This results in "1 / 1" in footer section in page 1 instead of "1 / 2" Exact steps to replicate the issue.
I've seen this issue in Word 2010 and 2013. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 08-12-2015 at 10:54 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

I am unable to reproduce the behaviour you report. Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change)?

I have replicated this issue at more than one machine with MS Office 2010 and 2013. Hence, I don't think it is an installation issue.
I'm attaching a document (issue.doc). When you open it, you'll "1 of 1" in the first page footer. You scroll down or double click the footer, it changes to "1 of 2". Close the document and re-open, the issue is back again. Now you double click on "2 of 2" and select "link to previous" in the toolbar section, the document is good. Your document behaves as you describe. I note that the numpages field also changes to the number 2 when you print.
Not sure why this happens nor why it is a problem for you since it will print correctly. However, if you substitute DOCPROPERTY PAGES for NUMPAGES, the anomaly disappears. You could also lose the *\ MERGEFORMAT from the fields. |

I see the issue in your document also. However, a print preview fixes it without the need to open/close the footer or change the footer linking. I agree with Charles that you don't need the *\ MERGEFORMAT switches, either.
You should still try repairing the Office installation to ensure that isn't contributing to the problem.

Thanks Charles. DOCPROPERTY PAGES field code works like a charm.
Sure Paul. |
