I live and breathe macros. I have a few dozen icons on my Quick Access toolbar all mapped to macros. They used to fit on one line in the Quick Access toolbar with room to spare on a 24 inch monitor. However, when we upgraded to Office 2013, these icons displayed excessive spacing between them, so the ones off to the right only display when I click a double arrow.

There does not appear to be an option to display the Quick Access toolbar on two lines, nor does there appear to be an option to adjust the size of the icons so I can make them all fit again.

Can someone please tell me where to go to make these adjustments?

You need to set the option to not display for a touchscreen. That (default, I think) setting expands the icons to make them easier for fingers. You want the line shown below to not be checked.

Note that using macros for insertion of text phrases is a holdover from WP. AutoText and AutoCorrect are much better suited to this purpose in Word.

Automated Boilerplate Using Microsoft Word

Your image is apparently from a smart phone or tablet - the PC version displays the old Word Options dialog, and doesn't give you the option to select or de-select touch/mouse mode. I went through the Advanced tab, and couldn't find anything in the Display section (or any other section) that might help. I've checked every other Settings dialog I could think of, but must have missed something somewhere. Any additional thoughts?

No worries on my macros, by the way - I'm a technical writer, so most of my macros set my text styles and paragraph attributes, or are Microsoft macros I add to the toolbar. I use AutoText for standard verbiage, and things like acronyms, images, and document or table templates.

That menu is the one that drops down at the end of the QAT.

Sorry - the right hand side of my toolbar is buried behind a double arrow, so I didn't think to look there. (With every unnecessary keystroke or buried option I get further irritated with software. Stuff like that is the efficiency equivalent of a software bug.)

That option isn't checked. So you're saying this is as narrow as the icon spacing gets in this version, correct? I hate it when Word design changes cost me keystroke efficiency. This one did that. Dang, I just hate that.

You can assign keyboard shortcuts to your macros. I especially like the two-stage ones. With those, you would press something like Ctrl+Alt+M followed by another character. With this you could assign 1-0 and a-z as the continuation characters and have access to 36 macros through the Ctrl+Alt+M key combination.

Keyboard shortcuts are even more efficient than QAT icons since they require no mouse action. Remember to store them in the same template that holds the macros. Note, I do not recommend storing macros in the normal template but rather in a separate Global Template.

I have literally dozens of macros. The icons sort them visually in hierarchy order on my toolbar, so short keys would drive me nuts, trying to remember them. But I'm already beginning to think of numeric patterns I can assign to the shortcuts, so that might be a doable solution. Thanks!

However, I would like to add to your comment about global macros for anyone else reading this: KEEP A CURRENT BACKUP of your normal.dotm file, and KEEP IT IN MULTIPLE PLACES. I saved mine to the shared drive, which our IT department cleared out by accident (ye gods). I was able to recover most of my files, but forgot about my normal.dotm. Then I heard about the upgrade to Word 2013, which prompted me to try and quickly save my latest version. Alas, I was too late. The upgrade had already overwritten it. The most recent version I could find was from October 2014.

Let that be a lesson to us all.

Note that QAT modifications can be saved in templates or documents. So you can save them in document (as well as global) templates.

You might actually have to bite the bullet and get into XML rlibbon modification.

That would let you develop ribbon groups and even menus for your macros. It is a steep learning curve if you haven't done XML before but as Greg Maxey says: Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science).

Again, for many good reasons, keep your customizations out of the normal template.
I store a lot of resources in my normal template, but they are backed up. However, anything that I want to be able to share or put on multiple computers goes into one or more different templates.
