Default Chapter number in header does not resolve

When I put this field {SEQ Chapter} in the header, I get the error message "Error main document only". The field works fine in the main document

How do I insert a chapter number from the style "Heading 1" in the header?

There is a similar discussion at:
https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...rs-header.html

Alternatively, here is a link that spells out defining the construction of heading numbering:
http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...g20072010.html

Hope this helps...

Does this indicate you're trying to work with the notorious "master document" feature? That's a quick route to frustration and all sorts of problems.

I am not using the "master document" feature. All chapters are in the same document and the seq field works fine in the body text of the document.

I use a style separator to have the Heading 1 and chapnum styles on the same line. Heading 1 has the heading text. The chapnum style has the chapter number.

My Heading 1/Chapnum line looks as follows: Chapter title <pilcrow>{SEQ Chapter\* MERGEFORMAT}<pilcrow>

I want to put the chapter numer in the header.

I'd suggest applying a unique Style to the SEQ field and using a STYLEREF field in the header.
