Default Styles and Numbering for Heading 2 gone wrong

I've been given a doc where the styles are not working as I would expect.

Heading 1 = 1. Heading
Heading 1 = 2.Heading
Heading 2 (I have had to modify to get numbers) = 1.1 Heading
Heading 2 = 1.2 Heading

I want the Heading 2, to pick up the numbering i.e. be 2.1, 2.2

Set numbering Value just update the decimal i.e 1.1 1.2 1.3

Continue Numbering changes the 1.1 to 3, setting it to be a Heading 1

Is there anyway to rest all Styles or re-import , or simply get heading 2 to pick up the numbering off heading 1

Thanks

Is this in .doc format and are you opening it with Word 2010 or later? We had a company template I created especially for handling Word files from several sources with possibly conflicting styles. The template styles were based on "no style" so that they could be applied without conflicts. It worked fine for years, but in Word 2010 it started acting crazy. One style ("bullets," I think it was) would change on its own into Heading 3. It's possible that certain styles from a Word doc will be unstable in docx.

Hi thanks for the replies

It is a .docx

It could have been upgraded from .doc, as we use Google Drive and that does like to update versions when you upload

I've sorted it in the short term with the Set Numbering and "Continue from Previous List", "Advance Value (Skip Numbers)"

A fudge of sorts.

I may just create my next document from fresh and hope it all works out

Set up a multilevel list of headings. Click in the first Heading 1 paragraph of your document and then click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. Assign heading styles to numbering levels. See http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...g20072010.html.
