Default Trying to make an outline in word 2013

I am trying to create an outline in word and I cannot get the outline to autonumber. For example my outline is as follows

I. Heading
A. Point 1
B. Point 2
1. subpoint 1
2. subpoint 2
C. Point 3

I am not very familiar with Word 2013, but in earlier versions of word if you could create an outline and every time you hit enter it would autonumber the next line and you could use tab or shift-tab to toggle which level the next point should be. Does nayone know how I can fix this? I googled and tried to apply what I found to no avail. Thanks!

Try changing to Outline View.
You have to have a numbering list to start with. See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

As Charles has said, you should set up a multilevel list whose levels you associate with paragraph styles (one style for each level). In the article at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html, the built-in headings are used as examples, but you can use any set of nine styles. You do have to make use of the built-in headings if you want to be able to demote and promote headings in Outline view.

In any multilevel list, you can change the numbering level for the current paragraph by using the shortcuts Alt+Shift+Left arrow and Alt+Shift+Right arrow, respectively. (You can also use Tab and Shift+Tab.)

Changing the numbering level doesn't work for the first item in a list, though. Press Enter to create a new numbered paragraph first.
