Post Adding Bible Verses in Header + Page Number

I'm having difficultly figuring out how I can add a verse to the top of a page without disturbing the Word's insertion of the page number, and without having the manually entered verse I enter at the top of one page simply repeated on all the others.

Here's an example of what I'm trying to do:

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/Pr...ge89-Bible.jpg

In addition to the page number, at the top left of the page we can see that 2 Samuel 12:15 is noted as the beginning verse for that page, and on the other page we see 2 Samuel 13:31. These verse notations are going to be different for every single page, and that's where I'm having an issue.

Thank you.

Provided each Book starts on a new page, Word can most easily do that if you use a different odd/even page layout, and a set of three STYLEREF fields in each header (left-aligned on odd pages & right-aligned on even pages). The:
• 1st STYLEREF field would reference the Style used for the Book name
• 2nd STYLEREF field would reference the Style used for the Chapter number
• 3rd STYLEREF field would reference the Style used for the Verse number
This, of course, means formatting each Book name, Chapter number & Verse number with Styles that aren't used anywhere else in the document. You might even define Chapter number & Verse number Character Styles just for this purpose. The Book name Style could probably be done using one of Word's Heading Styles.

On the:
• odd pages the STYLEREF fields would each require no switches. The field codes on the odd pages would look like:
{STYLEREF "Book"} {={STYLEREF "Chapter"}-{={STYLEREF "Verse"}-1 \# "1;;0"} \# "0"}:{STYLEREF "Verse"}
• even pages the STYLEREF fields would each require the \l switch. The field code on the odd pages would look like:
{STYLEREF "Book"} {STYLEREF "Chapter" \l}:{ STYLEREF "Verse" \l}

where Book, Chapter & Verse are the Style names.

Note: The STYLEREF field for the even page chapters is enclosed in a formula field. To create that arrangement, all the field brace pairs (i.e. '{ }') for the field coding are created in the document itself, via Ctrl-F9 (Cmd-F9 on a Mac); you can't simply type them or copy & paste them from this message. Nor is it practicable to add them via any of the standard Word dialogues.

For further detail on the STYLEREF field, see:
https://support.office.com/en-us/art...rs=en-US&ad=US

See attached demo, which uses the 'Heading 1' Style for the Book names. The Chapter & Verse numbers use 'Chapter' & 'Verse' Character Styles, respectively

Thank you for the quick and informative response.

I'm having another issue I cannot solve. Sometimes when I paste text into the document I'll see huge paragraph spacing between the text. If I try to backspace and remove the spacing so the text is all on one block, sometimes it doesn't even work, and when it does, and then I hit ENTER to push the text down only a single line, it ends up once again creating a massive space (often pushing the text to the next page). This is extremely frustrating as you can imagine. I've tried to strip the text of any formatting by pasting it into Notepad and then putting it back in Word, but that doesn't solve the issue.

Vertical spacing could be Spacing Before and/or Spacing After (in the Paragraph dialog box) which you can change to zero.

Note that recent versions of Word have some Spacing After by default. You can change that in the Manage Styles dialog box.

To display the dialog box, click the Manage Styles icon in the Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S). You'll find the relevant options on the Set Defaults tab.

I'm sorry but I'm not following this.

Where is the Paragraph dialog box?

I pulled up the Styles pane. I don't see a set defaults tab and I don't see a place to type a 0 anywhere. Selecting "No Spacing" doesn't solve this issue: if I hit the ENTER key the text still jumps to the next page. Why would anyone think that programming the software to make your text jump massive spaces would be a good idea? Yes, I'm frustrated.

UPDATE: I figured it out. The following video helped. Thank you for assisting me. Word is a little more complex than I imagined. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uQwfFyX09Q

Document defaults can be entered on the Set Defaults tab of the dialog box, as I wrote.

The Paragraph dialog box can be accessed by clicking the dialog launcher button in the Paragraph group on the Page Layout tab.

Since you have now fixed the problem, what turned out to be the underlying cause?

Macropod, I know it's many years later, but I wanted to thank you for this. I could not, Could Not, COULD NOT get this to work, and your post and example totally saved the day. I am so grateful. Many thanks!
