Default In 2010 document set for no space between paragraphs, but getting large space.

I had a complete manuscript saved in paperback book format. Went in to add some sentences here and there, and all of a sudden when I hit enter to start a new paragraph, I get a huge space, even though document is set at single spacing, no space between paragraphs. Cannot get rid of the unwanted space.

Click the ¶ button on the Home tab, which should give you some indication what is causing the problem. Based on the limited information provided I would start by checking the Page Layout > Page Setup > Layout > Vertical alignment setting, which should be 'Top'.

Thanks, but the vertical alignment *is* set at "Top." All settings seem to be what they should be. I have tried highlighting the extra space and changing the spacing settings, but they are already what they should be. It's as if the extra space were not there. And now I am getting an extra line, or I guess the equivalent of a line and a half, between *all* paragraphs, whenever I make a change. The formatting of my perfect manuscript is slowly but surely being destroyed!

What about the "Spacing" Before and After (see attached dialog box/menu)...Are they set to a specific value? Or, are they set to "Auto"?

My spacing and indentation settings are the same as yours; the only differences are that the alignment is set at justified, as this is a book manuscript, and "Don't add space between paragraphs" is checked.

Can you post an example document that illustrates the problem?

One detail, first: When you looked at "Vertical alignment," did you do so in the Page Setup dialog box?

I couldn't post a sample because when I copied and pasted a couple of the offending paragraphs the spacing on them was just fine when pasted into a new doc. However, I did go into Page Set-Up and found that the Vertical Alignment was set at Justified (which the document in general is set at). When I changed it to Top, the spacing difficulties did disappear. I don't understand that at all, but at least it worked. Thanks so much!

Spacing between paragraphs is what Word adjusts when Vertical Alignment is set to "Justified." In other words, what you see is to be expected. (Word doesn't do a very good job with justified Vertical Alignment.)

I have the same problem, except my extra "virtual" spaces between paragraphs only show up when I copy my newspaper column and paste it into the body of an email. When it is copied out of the email the extra spaces between paragraphs are still there and won't leave. I have done everything you suggested but nothing has worked so far. I am sad.

You have very little control over formatting when pasting Word content into another program. In particular, an e-mail program usually supports only a fraction of the functionality available in a word processor.

I suggest that you convert the Word document into a PDF and send the PDF as an attachment to an e-mail.

Thanks for your insight. I have been sending my newspaper column for many years in the body of emails with no problem. This is a new problem from about two months ago. I have started sending the column as a Word attachment and have heard no complaints so hopefully it is working.
