Default Line Spacing Between Like and Unlike Bullets

Hi all,

I'm working on a template and this is absolutely driving me round the twist.

I want to use different line spacing between like and unlike bullets. That is to say, I want 12pt between two bullets of different levels, but 8pt between bullets of the same level. So (in a simplified way) it would look like this:

* Level 1 Bullet

* Level 1 Bullet

- Level 2 Bullet

- Level 2 Bullet

Does that make sense? I see the option to not add a space at all between bullets of the same style, but I want to add a space--just a different amount of space than between bullets of different styles.

Does anyone know how to do this? It's driving me crazy. I'm sure the answer is super obvious and I'm just overlooking it. Please help!

Here is a link that should help you: https://shaunakelly.com/word/bullets...s20072010.html

Of course, because "styles" are important to use within MSWord, there are more links that you may need to review...such as:
Understanding styles | ShaunaKelly.com
Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word

These are but a couple of the many links available to help in MSWord. HTH's...

As Jim suggested, it is in Styles. Not learning styles and trying to use Word for anything other than a short letter or list is shooting yourself in the foot. Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word.

Thank you both for your replies.

I'm already very familiar with styles, which is why I'm finding this particular problem so irritating.

I have attached screenshots of my style list, as well as the Paragraph settings of my first two custom bullet styles. As you can see, the line spacing for both is set to 0pt Before, 8pt After.

When I select the "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style" option, bullets of the same style are set to 0pt After, as expected.

What I really want to do is set the spacing for all the styles as 12pt After, but have 8pt After for paragraphs of the same style.

However, at this point is seems my only options are to have the same amount of space between like styles as between unlike styles, or NO space between paragraphs of the same style. Surely this can't be the case.

I know how styles work; my question is, which style setting needs to be altered in order to achieve what I'm doing?

  1. Did you go through the link provided by JimP to Shauna Kelly's page? There is a bit more to it than using styles.
  2. You could increase your line spacing to the height of your font + 8 pts. I think this would be the equivalent of space before.
