Default Impossible?: Navigable Header on Endnotes Page

I want the word 'Notes' to appear in my Heading 1 style directly above my Endnotes.

Endnotes have a nasty habit of wanting their own page. I can get around this by placing 'Notes' in the Endnotes separator box.

But I cannot get 'Notes' to show up on the Table of Contents.

Is there a way to edit the Endnotes style directly to allow text on the Endnotes page? Or perhaps through a header, although I can't seem to add one to the Endnotes page either. Google tells me there is a way to enable the Header on the Endnote page, but I can't find it in Word 2013.

Why not simply insert your Notes/Endnotes heading directly into the document with a 'Next Page' Section break either side of the heading and immediately before the first endnote? You can use Word's 'suppress endnotes' option in the page layout tools to force the endnotes to appear after the heading.

I'm not sure I understand...I want the heading on the same page as the endnotes themselves. I don't see how your proposal gets them both on the same page.

I'm currently using 'supress endnotes' to get the endnotes down to roughly where I want them in the document, but there seems to be no way to get the heading on the same page as the end notes, while retaining the heading's role in the table of contents.

But that's exactly what the process I described achieves! Indeed, I have a document with exactly that configuration. See attached extract.

On the left in the Navigation pane you can see the table of contents. Notes1 is visible, Notes2 is not. Both are styled as Heading 1 (orange) but because Notes2 is in the endnotes section itself, it doesn't appear in the table of contents.

Why don't the endnotes appear directly after the continous section break?\

edit: trying your demo now.

My endnote text style has some strange properties, such as a frame around it. I think that's the problem. How do I reset the endnote text style?

Selecting the endnote range and pressing Ctrl-Space will remove all character formatting, whilst Ctrl-Q will remove all paragraph-level formatting, the same as it will for anywhere else in the document. Note that Ctrl-Space will also remove the superscripting from all the endnote references. None of this will affect any frames, however.

How would I go about removing a frame in the endnotes style? I really need to reset, my document is getting mangled at this point.

Is there anyway I can PM you the document itself?

Without actually seeing the problem document (you could attach an extract to a post - just as I did - pics aren't much good, though), it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue.

You can attach a document to a post via the paperclip symbol on the Advanced screen.

The problem seems to lie in when the endnotes extend beyond one page. If you change the Endnote Text style from double to single spaced, you can see it moves location.

Interestingly, I can't replicate the problem behavior in your document above. There must be something screwy about my attached document.

What moves location? Your attachment already has a very large font, with the notes extending over two pages. The only thing odd I can see is that you've messed around with the endnote separator, etc., to insert double paragraphs with large spacing. You can fix those by going into Draft view, clicking on 'Show Notes' on the References tab, then choosing the endnote separator, etc. from the dropdown. The essential difference between my attachment and yours in that respect, is that I've formatted the endnote separator, etc. as 1pt text in paragraphs with 0 before/after spacing.

I made the font large to illustrate that when the Endnotes extend over one page, the first moves location from directly below the Heading, to its own page. If you change the spacing of the endnote text you can see the endnotes are in the correct location while single-spaced, but the incorrect location while double-spaced. This problem behavior happens when the endnote text range extends past one page.

I've fixed the endnote separator in the attached document. I don't think that was having an impact on my inability to get the endnotes on the same page as the heading, as the problem remains.

Let me try and articulate the problem more clearly. Thank you for your patience. I've spent many hours setting up this document and I don't want to have to redo it.

In attached photo 1 is the correct behavior that finally appeared. I've highlighted a mark that's part of the previous section. (What is this mark? What's it called and why is it all over my document? I don't see it at all in yours, even when I turn on hidden marks). If I delete the mark, the problem behavior in photo 2 reappears. Photo 2 was what I've been dealing with this whole time: the heading is in the body text, but the notes don't appear until the next page after.

I've attached the whole document--don't want to leave it up forever because it has my original writing. But see if you can identify what is going wrong on page 81 to prevent endnotes from appearing in the Notes section.

I don't see that behaviour with your attachment.

I, too, have no idea what the mark you're seeing is; I don't see it in your document when I open it. Judging from the fields in your endnotes, it appears you're using an Addin like EndNote and what you're seeing may be connected with that.
