Right-aligned chapter number in Heading 1
I want a right aligned heading number in my Heading 1.
Example: Introduction 1 The number "1" should be left-aligned in the TOC. Example: Contents 1. Introduction About the xyz system .................. 1Is that possible in Word 2010? |

You will have to explain more in detail what you are trying to accomplish. Are you saying that you want the paragraph number to the right in the body of the document? That would require installing a right-to-left language, I believe.

Yes
My heading 1 is the chapter title, and I want the number to the right. See attachment "Chapter number in heading 1". I was considering placing a field code for a number after a tab in the heading, but the result was that it started with a zero. My other issue is that I want the chapter title and number in the header. See attachment "Chapter number and title in header". To complicate things even further I want the chapter number to the left in the TOC. See attachment "TOC". |

You can create your chapter numbers with SEQ fields. For example, you can use:
{ SEQ Chapter } To insert the field, you can press Ctrl+F9; Word adds the field delimiters, { }, and you can then type in the code shown above. Press F9 to update. You can use copy and paste when you want to duplicate the field, but note that in doing that you will have to force an update, either by selecting the text and pressing F9 or by switching to Print Preview and exit Print Preview (Ctrl+F2 followed by ESC does the trick).

Right now I just set the chapter number in the Heading 1 as a field after a tab. This results in the chapter number getting into the TOC twice: On front of the chapter title and with the tab after the chapter title.
How do I prevent the chapter number after the tab from displaying in the TOC? |

Sorry, I should have mentioned that additional "tricks" are required. For example, you can insert a style separator at the end of the text and then insert your SEQ field.
Introduction<style separator>{ SEQ Chapter } To add the style separator, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Enter. When adding it, be sure that you have nonprinting marks displayed (for that you can use the ¶ button on the Home tab). The separator looks like a pilcrow, ¶, surrounded by a dotted line. In the TOC, only include the paragraph style applied to the left of the style separator. To get numbering in the TOC, you can add it to the TOC 1 style.
