Default Why does Word indexing change section page numbering to "continuous"?

When I generate or update an Index in Word, it resets Section Page Numbering to "Continuous" when I need it to retained as "from Page 1". Page number formats in my other sections are different anyway, so there'd be no confusion.

Why does it do that, when Table of Contents leaves page numbering unchanged. How can I make it act sensibly?

And, is it possible to generate an index for just one section? Surely after nearly 30 years Word should be perfect?

I am not aware that it does this.
Which section does it reset this for?

Thanks, Charles ...

Indeed, it does do this, whether I use the file in DOC form (2k3) or DOCX (2k7) or compatibility mode. The book has only two sections, one of 15 pages, and numbered in small Roman numerals (for copyright/dedication/acknowledgements etc), and a much larger one of some 250 pages containing 14 chapters.

This is the second book I have created using Word 2k7, and I noticed the problem last time too. Naturally, it is the second section which is altered by Word.
The original settings are:
"Insert -> Page Numbers -> Page Number Format" as "Start at"- Page 1.
However, at the start of the index creation or replacement, Word repaginates (OK, but its not necessary as the pagination is up-to-date) but repagination is done AFTER altering the above Page Number Format setting to "continuous".

(As Table of Content update does not alter these settings, left to its own devices, Word will mis-number pages in the ToC, as the ToC update does not change the page numbers even if Start At = Page 1, but subsequent indexing will re-number pages.)

Much better behaviour would be to leave the second section page number as set, as this is the convention for the main part of the book i.e. starts at Page 1.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is this a multi-column index? In that case, updating the INDEX field creates section breaks in the text (surrounding the index content).

Have you tried adding a Next Page section break at the end of paragraph immediately preceding the index?

Hello again, Stefan ...

Well, although it is a 2-column Index, Word does not appear to create a separate section for the Index, as far as I can ascertain.

Unfortunately, if I create a section for the Index as suggested, I must also create a new section immediately after it, because in my document the pages after the index are not permitted to have page numbers. But Word does not behave properly because if I clear the page numbers from that final section, it also clears the page numbers from the previous section, because it is insisting that the page numbering is continuous.

If you are a Microsoft MVP, please pass on the fact that Word is very very irritating when producing long documents with many embedded images and sections. I have used Word in its various versions since version 1, and have been deeply involved in computing since 1978. I'd have thought that Microsoft should have finished writing Word by now! How I'd LOVE to get old Bill Gates for a day - retired or not!

Many thanks

If you switch to Draft view and show nonprinting marks, you will see the section breaks added by the multi-column index.

However, it is possible that you inadvertently added the section break(s) inside the index. That is going to cause trouble.

Here's how to avoid problems: Temporarily show field codes instead of field results by pressing Alt+F9; you'll find that your index is now displayed as { INDEX }. Make sure that there is a section break before the index and another one after. You can now unlink headers (footers) and add page numbers as required.
