Default help needed for automatic update of footer

hello Friends,

I needed some help out here.

I want to make a footer which can keep updating the serial number everytime a new word document is opened up...
For example i want that footer to be named as
XXX/XXXX/XXXX/21 (XXX is for example say my company/department name). Now every time i open up this template i want the number to change automatically (to say 22, 23, 24 and so on).

I hope i am clear on explaining my issue..
is this possible to do on word and ppt?? if yes pls help.

Thank you very much!!!

I don't know about PPT.

In Word I would do this with an AutoOpen macro that increments either a document variable or a document property. Then I would display that with a document variable or document property field in the footer. The AutoOpen macro would update the field.

This of course assumes that macros are able to run in that document.

If there are a number of documents you do this with, I would consider adding the macro to the DocumentOpen event in a global template.

For me, these are not trivial exercises. I would expect to spend 1-3 hours doing it. I am a dabbler, though, not a programmer. Someone else may be able to present a macro solution.

I would ask why you want to do this. There may be an easier way to accomplish your goals.

Thanks Charles,
the idea is to make overall documentation of all the reports/documents generated in house a bit easier.
We are a group of 5 people working in a group and i would like everyone to have different numbers on the word documents (and eventually projects).
i want the source template to be one so that once you open it and save it ,it will give you different number and then you can take it forward . This way there wont be any confusion as such for who uses what number as well..

There are several suggestions that you might find useful at http://www.gmayor.com/automatic_numbering_documents.htm

First, the proper way to use a Template is the creation of a new document from it, rather than opening it, changing it and saving it. I assume that all users have a common server or source for the template.

Template is a jargon term in Word. Templates in Microsoft Word

When used in a template, the macro would be an AutoNew macro or a DocumentNew event handler.

The following may be of assistance:
Automatically number Word documents

No, but there are forums dealing with those. You might include a link to Graham's page in your inquiry.
