XML marking of Auto-numbered Headings

I have a document that structured like this:

Auto-numbered Heading followed by Heading Text
then followed by Body text



I've created a schema to mark the heading numbers, heading text, and following body text in my document. The problem I'm running into is that when I select the paragraph number every other number of equal heading level is selected as well. Then when I try to apply the XML tag to the paragraph number I get a message saying "This XML element cannot be inserted around multiple items". I need help I'm very new to this.

I'm doing this because I need to extract certain heading numbers, heading texts, and following paragraph text to an excel file where I can work with it all in table form. If there's a better way please let me know.
