Default Paste issues

I'm in Word 365, I have two docs that need to be duplicate, I've made adjustments to one of them... so now I'm trying to paste the new text into the alternate... I need it to retain some of the formatting from the source doc, and some from the destination doc... Originally, choosing "merge formatting" was getting me close, but my paragraphs that had no indentation were coming out indented, everything else looked good. But somehow that changed, now I'm losing all indentation, so each line in left justified. As far as I can tell I didn't make any change to account for that. What I would like to know, is there a way to choose what formatting features are kept from source to destination? If not, how can I get my program back to what it was doing... no settings I adjust seem to make a difference.

Your description suggests either or both documents have content formatted in ways that override the underlying Style definitions and/or the same Style names are used in both documents but Style the definitions differ.

You wouldn't have these issues if both documents had the same Style definitions and they weren't overridden with hard formatting. As it is, it seems you'll have to choose between retaining the source formatting or applying the destination formatting - you can't have bits of both. Or you could correct the Style definitions in either or both documents and ensure they're used correctly.

Thanks, I'll look into those, a little complex for my taste, but I'll make it work, just a lot of extra time.
