Two footnotes with the same number

I've been editing a really large word file with hundreds of foornotes and refferences. suddenly, TWO of the footnotes had the same number and the rest of footnotes and much of the text possitioning, after that became a mess. How can this be fixed? Thanks in advance for all help offered.
