Large Word doc duplicating large sections when I print it.
Hi all
First time poster. I'm working on a large document which has lots of figures and cross references. But when I try to print it copies about 50 pages and inserts them into the document. Anyone come across this? I'm in Word 2010. Thanks Kea |

Since you see this on print, something may have happened to the cross-reference fields, or, to be more specific, something may have happend to the hidden bookmarks that Word makes use of when creating cross-references.
If the option to update fields on printing is selected at File tab | Options | Display, then deselect that option. See what happens if you manually update a cross-reference by selecting it and pressing F9. Also, are you allowed to share the document?

Thanks very much Stefan- sorry for the slow reply. I'm in New Zealand.
It's a big document- 120 pages. The text that is duplicated is highlighted in grey as cross references are so I suspect you are right. I have deleted the table of contents and will try deselecting update fields as you suggest. I will also go through and see if I can find the culprit cross reference! I'm afraid the document is confidential. |

Thanks for the follow-up.
When you do find the problem cross-references, note that you have to recreate them from start. Depending on the number of cross-references affected, this may be a time-consuming task, unfortunately. The problem (a design flaw in Word, really) is as follows: When you add a cross-reference, Word encloses the cross-referenced paragraph in a hidden bookmark. The problem is that if you press Enter, or add content, at the beginning of a bookmarked/cross-referenced paragraph, what you add will end up inside the bookmark, which of course causes trouble with the cross-reference the next time you update it. The workaround is to always add content (or press Enter) at the end of the previous paragraph instead.
