Default Digital Signature

I am looking for software that will allow me to sign a document and if the document is changed the signature is no longer valid. I also would like the signature for the document to be valid forever and not just for a subscription period.

Right now I can pay a notary public, get my signature notarized and that document is good forever. It does not even matter if the notary public kicks the bucket. Is it too much to ask to for some software that can perform a similar function?

Where you live may make a difference … I've heard this is all fairly easy in Belgium and that our eID cards even play nicely with MS Office, but you might not consider that grounds for moving :-}

All these digital signatures require a certificate which must be renewed $$$ annually or all of a sudden all your documents no longer have a trusted signature. I have many of those.

I don't know what the solution is if we are going to leave paper behind. Maybe the governments needs to supply non-expiring certificates like they do a social insurance numbers.
