Default Keeping links when converted to PDF and merged

I'm working on an Operating Manual written in Word. There are a number of different Word docs (maybe 30 or so) that interlink / cross reference to each other.

They only really need to link to the document level as opposed to specific paragraphs in the other document which makes things a little simpler. However...

The final output of the manual needs to be PDF, and ideally a single PDF file by merging/combining the files. The problem is that if I have PDF 1 linking to PDF 5 in my folder structure, as soon as I merge the PDFs into a single file, the links will be lost as it'll be linked to the relative file path of the single PDF file.

I cannot combine the PDFs first and manually go through and do the linking afterwards, because the Word docs may be updated fairly regularly, so it's not practical to have to do the links every time.

Does anybody have any clever suggestions please?
