Get rid of ".docx'
I have Word 2007 on several PCs and have a silly little glitch on one only.
Word documents and PDFs all have a tag on the end of the name; ie “Letter to Santa” becomes Letter to Santa.doc and sometimes Letter to Santa.docx Same with PDFs; ie Easter Bunny.pdf As I stated, this is only happening on one machine and I find it annoying. A fresh Office install did not change anything. How to eliminate this name tag? |

First, I would never work on a machine that did not display these "filename extensions."
But, I'm not you. This is a Windows View setting. Open any Windows folder and change the view options to not show file name extensions. That is the default setting for Windows. Attached is a screen shot from a Windows 8.1 computer. It may differ with different operating systems and may include the words "known file types." |

This is not an Office choice, but a Windows feature. To hide the file extensions on all files, go to Control Panel/Folder Options and select the View tab. Scroll down just a bit and "check" the Hide file extensions.

Thanks Ulodesk.
So will a trapdoor open 'neath my feet when I do that? |

Trap
And before you know it, you'll be in Bill Gate's living room -- which, but the way, is reported to have windows.

E-gads, man!
I've been by that fortress in my boat and that is the last place I would want to end up. Now I know why the dire warning from Mr. Kenyon; he must have encountered Gates gallows. Really though, all other PCs have been extension-less forever without issue so I went ahead and followed your path. Thank you. |

The reason I want extensions shown is that Windows (since Windows 3) has had the tendency to get confused on what files go with which program. It will change the icons when it does this so that things look OK but are not. The extensions are the key to sorting things out.

Understood, Charles.
My PC use is very simplistic and I suppose that is why I have never had an issue. Oh sure, most of my icons went back to the generic "e" when I unchecked the show extensions box but, my time is limitless so, one by one, I will generate new ones. If it is appropriate, you can mark this 'n' solved if you like. Thanks. |
