After changing the page order of some of the pages in my document, the new index showed the correct page number for the citation but did not change the order of the index entry.
Eg. "Good-bye" was on page 68 and "Goodnight" was on page 69.
To put them in proper alphabetical order, I changed them to:
"Goodnight" on page 68 and "Good-bye" on page 69.


When I reindexed, the page numbers were correct, but they still appeared in the wrong sequence in the index. How do I get the index entries to appear in the correct sequence?

Is this an index? Then I would expect the words to display in alphabetical order. Are you saying that they don't?

I guess that is a question of how you define "alphabetical order". Which comes first,
Good-bye or Goodnight? I would put "goodn.." before any "good-..". How about you?

Personally, I would ignore the hyphen when sorting. I'm not sure what would be standard in (US) English, though...

It's not a question of one's personal preference in alphabetizing. It's a question of what system Microsoft Word uses. Apparently they ignore the hyphen, while other programs treat the hyphen as if it were a letter. It would be helpful if Microsoft were more explicit in using such rules. I will have to change the format of the other program I am using in order to have them agree on page numbers.

Sort options may be different depending on the language applied at the insertion point. Beyond that, you can't customize sorting in Word, unfortunately.
