Can't get rid of Chinese character when inserting citation
This problem is making me pull my hair out. I have a Word document with 100% English text (does not, has not, and never will have any other languages). However, when I go to insert a citation and I click the correct source from the drop-down list, I get:
[焾] as opposed to: [1] I have tried deleting and recreating the source to no avail. Furthermore, when I delete the citation and then click "Update citations and bibliography", the next citation changes to this strange character. All of the rest of the citations are numbered correctly. Any idea what's going on here, and how I can fix it? |

If you press Alt+F9 to display field codes, what does the CITATION field look like? In particular, what number is following the \l switch ("l" is lowercase "L").

Honestly, I got a little frustrated that nobody was replying, so I just converted the sources to static text and moved on...thank you for being the first and only person on this site to offer assistance. |

1033 refers to US English, so that doesn't give a clue in this case. :-(
For what it's worth, all of these language IDs are listed in the article at https://support.office.com/en-au/art...rs=en-AU&ad=AU.

I can't seem to find one single case of anyone else having this problem, so at this point I'm just chalking it up to unsolvable... |

Thanks for the follow-up.
Since you have now started over, it's going to be difficult to figure out the underlying cause, of course.

Yeah, I know. But I couldn't wait on this (it's for a research paper), and it didn't appear like anyone was going to offer up any help...

I guessed it was something like that. Of course, when we're on a deadline, we have to make do with a quick workaround. :-)

() instead of (1) The next citation will take on the value instead (e.g., citation #2 in the paper shows up as (1)) I have tried doing a complete repair of the software without success...anything else I can look for? |

Is the problem still with one particular document? In that case, try copying its content, minus the final paragraph mark, into a new document.
To show/hide paragraph marks (¶) as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ button on the Home tab.

No, the problem exists across multiple documents (the copy/paste technique was the first thing I tried). :-(

OK, that suggests a problem with the bibliography feature itself. I'm afraid I don't have more suggestions at the moment.

Since we don't know the underlying cause for the problem, a reinstallation won't necessarily work.
If you do attempt a reinstallation, make sure that you have all the information required to install Office (a Microsoft account and/or a product key). Also, you will have to remove all traces of the installation first, which is discussed in the article at https://support.office.com/en-us/art...rs=en-US&ad=US.
