Question Problem Disabling Bluetooth Add-On (Word 2007) as "Administrator"

Dear all,

I've tried to follow the instructions below, how to disable the bluetooth add-on (the "checkmark") in Word 2007 which causes this extremely annoying prompt asking about templates and stuff. I know the error is the bluetooth add-on from a year ago before my most recent Windows reinstallment. However, now the computer does not grant me "administrator" access despite that I'm the owner and administrator of my laptop.

The instruction posted below that it's a simple matter of "find[ing] the executable in Program files\Microsoft\Office\Winword.exe or Word.exe and right click. Choose run as Administrator" appears to be plain "Greek" to me. I've tried to search for the location of the "executable in Program files" for a very long time now, and nowhere do I find any "Winword.exe" or "Word.exe." How to I disable this useless Word bluetooth add-on as an "administrator"?

If there are any suggestion, please help me!

Sincerely
Max

Thumbs up

Almost a year later, grantmo to the rescue!
I used to just ignore this issue but figured I'd spend some time today trying to figure it out. Send to Bluetooth has caused other issues in our organisation in the past, don't know why I didn't disable it earlier!

Does MS create the plug-in or is it made by the BT OEM drivers?

Pity it still manages to cause issues in Office 2013 :/
Here I was thinking it was because the template was on the network. . .

Note that this is one of the problems experienced by many because of poorly written Add-Ins. An Add-In will often make changes to the user interface so that Word users can use the program of the Add-In creator better from within Word. That is often accomplished by making changes to the normal template without ever asking the user. Generally, the Add-In makes these changes temporary; but the template still knows that changes have been made.

I recall a looooong time ago and Add-In, from Adobe, I think, that added a button to launch its program. It added the button every time you started Word. It never erased the button or checked to see if it had already been added. People were having their screen real estate hijacked by multiples of the button.

Another problem that comes from poorly written Add-Ins is the inability to save changes to the template made by the user (like macros or styles) because the Add-In fools Word into thinking no changes have been made when it cleans up after itself.

Again, Microsoft is not going to fix problems caused by others.

GRANTMO - How you worked this out, I have no idea, but I am very grateful. What is bizarre is that this feature didn't have this effect until recently. Why, straight out of the blue, I shall probably never know. But thanks. Your answer worked.

Just a short reminder to those reading this thread, it can be any Add-In, not just the Blue-Tooth add-in that does this. Add-ins that cause this or similar problems have come from Adobe and even Microsoft.

The solution to this kind of issue has been posted in a number of places for a long time. The issue with add-ins causing problems goes back at least ten years (Adobe add-in) ...with the SAME solution (disable add-ins) posted in - again - a number of places. This is nothing new at all.

And no Microsoft will not fix it. It is not their problem, although I do personally believe that it is partially their problem, in that I do not think they fully release internal structure to third-party developers.

Smile thanks

thanks Grantmo - 2014 and this is still an issue. I'm using my laptop for a couple of weeks and don't have the issue on my PC so relieved you provided the answer - there is no way I could have worked this out or remained sane!.

Here is my solution:
Launch Word and click the Office button in the top left.
Click Word options at the bottom of that menu.
Click Add ins on the left.
Click the Go button for COM add ins
Remove the checkmark for Bluetooth **(see options below if not allowed)
Click OK and close out of word.
Launch Word and problem should be gone.

** If you cannot remove the checkmark, you need to launch Word as an Administrator. To do this, close out of Word, find the executable in Program files\Microsoft\Office\Winword.exe or Word.exe and right click. Choose run as Administrator.

Omg... thank you so much! I would have never suspected that Add Ons were the source of this particular problem.

Good karma to you!

Stupid me! How could I not think that bluetooth has anything to do with saving changes to the template? It is so obvious!!!

Why the hell would Bluetooth have anything to do with updating a template?!

Thank you for the solution!

Again, it can be any Add-In, not just the bluetooth one.

Default Dude! You Rock! It still works in Win 10, with Word 2013

The originally-posted solution to stubborn "...also save changes to template?" message has changed a little bit in Windows 10, but is basically the same. So this problem has existed for at least three years!

Here's the Windows 10 version; your objective is to disable the bluetooth Add-In. (No, really!) You may want to disable a few others as well, to speed bootup of Word:

Open Word
Click the "File" tab
Click "Options"
Select "Add-Ins" from the left column
Select "COM Add-Ins" from the scrolling menu at the bottom of the popup window
Click on "Go"
This should open a window showing all your Word Add-Ins; unselect "Bluetooth" (and anything else you suspect is crap, if you're brave)
Click "OK", log out of Word, log into Word. You should be good to go.

GRANTMO's original 2012 WIN 7 post, to which I owe my sanity, is below...
