Default Word 2013 - comparing documents does not show changes in new document

When I use Compare in the Review tab to compare two documents, the differences between them do not appear in the text. No redlining shows. The only indication of changes are lines in the border of the document. Because I have used Compare for years in different versions of Word and it is so easy to use, I suspect that my software is defective.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

According to the subject of this thread, you are using Word 2013 (the metadata says "Office 2010"). In that case, Word displays a simplified view by default. To see all markup, you have to choose "All Markup" from the Display for Review drop down on the Review tab.

Thanks. I figured that complication out after I posted. It is a change from preceding versions of Word and doesn't show up in any directions on using Compare.

I believe making the markup view less "cluttered" by default was a request from some users, and "Simple Markup" is Microsoft's implementation of that.

The good news is that once you have selected "All Markup" that option should stay selected for new and existing documents.
