Default Format Painter must be used twice to work fully

In Word from OFFICE 2013:
Select all or part of a line, click format painter, selecting all or part of second line. Only part of the attributes are applied.

This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough for it to be annoying. If I repeat this a second time, the remainder of the attributes are applied.

I don't know the cause, so I can't give instructions for replicating the problem from scratch. I do know that it isn't because the part selected has "mixed" attributes, preventing a specific attribute from being applied.

I have attached a simple file that recreates the problem.
Select a character from line one, click format painter, select a character from line 2. The FONT will not be applied. Instead, you get CALIBRI.

If you select a character in the first paragraph and then display the Font dialog box (Ctrl+D), you'll notice that the font is specified as "+Body" which means that you get the body font defined in the document theme; that is the font getting applied by the Format Painter to the text in the second paragraph.

I am not seeing that the font is specified as +Headings in that dialog box (screen print attached). Can you please explain?

Sorry, I should have clarified that the default font for the document is "+Body"; to see that, select some text and press Ctrl+SpaceBar—and then look in the Font dialog box again.

And the Format Painter is causing the default font setting to resurface. I can't explain why that happens.

Thank you for the explanation.
If I select a character from the first line, click on format painter, and apply it to the second line, the font type of the selected character is not applied. If I repeat this, it is.

You agree then, that it is not working correctly, and cannot explain why?

I'm saying that it may be a bug; I don't depend on the Format Painter that much, so I can't tell for certain.

It's a lot easier to apply formatting using styles. See http://shaunakelly.com/topic/word/styles.
