Can't open a document

Hi,
I am using MSOffice 97. I can not open a word document that I have used for years. When I try I get a message saying to make sure I have a .doc after the file name. I do but it won’t open. I need to open this because it contains critical information. How can I open this file. My help menu has disappeared so I need help online.

If you do not get a better solution, copy the doc to a stick memory, then see if someone else running Word can open it

I will give it a try. I have a new laptop and can try to open it there. I did try emailing it to myself on my old desktop but that didn't solve the problem. I'll let you know the out come but right now I am busy cooking a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Do you have a newer version of Word on the new laptop?

Emailing the doc to yourself still opens it with the same Word

We need to establish if the problem is with the doc or Word and move out from there

By the way, perchance do you have your word setup to make automatic backups...Not sure, then do a search for "bak

Hi,
I do have a newer version on my new computer. I opened the email here, tried a document recover that is in MSOffice 2007 and the document appeared. I really needed the "info" there and can't thank you enough.

I know the darn feeling when Office product starts acting flaky

May I suggest with the new Word, you set it up to automatically make back ups--It can be a pain, but it is nice to have those rare events that pop up with a crucial document
