OK, I've been doing some testing and can reproduce your issue on Word 2013. In my case, a 'previously minimised' document is brought back to the screen but it appears behind the new document window so it is barely noticeable.

I guess you could write a macro to minimise all windows except the top one but it certainly isn't high on my list of macro must haves.
