Default Figure Captioning Labels All Figures As Number 1

Hello,

I'm trying to create an automatic list of Figures and Tables for my Master's thesis, and I've hit a wall.

I've spent on the order of 8 hours trying to get Figure captioning to work correctly; following numerous tutorials, etc., none of which have helped.

I'm trying to set up a caption numbering system in the form of 'Figure A.B' where A is the chapter number and B is the number of the figure within that chapter. I have a style set for the chapter numbers, and the 'A' numbers seem to be correct, however no matter how many pictures are in place, the 'B' number is 1 for every picture.

I've tested a case where I caption a series of pictures all one after the other, and it seems to work correctly, however in my document I need to have text between the images, which somehow resets the image count every time. I have tried setting all captions up on a single image and then placing them correctly, however whenever I revise or change anything in the document, all of the numbering resets back to 1 again.

Please help; I'm completely fed up with trying in vain to get Word to do what I need.

Thank you.

To do this you need to be using the heading styles where the number for Heading 1 is the number that appears in your "figure A" example.

The incrementing number needs to have a field value that tells it to reset after a Heading 1. The field code should look something like the following...
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 1 }
where \s 1 tells the number to restart after a Heading 1 paragraph.
