Default Highlighting next number

How do I get Word 2013 not to highlight the next number in a sequence.

I'm doing some changes to some documents and creating numbered lists. I put a highlight on the last few words so as to remind myself to refer to specific regulations. When I hit enter, the next number is highlighted and I don't want that. Is there any way to stop Word from doing that other than not highlighting the last words.

Instead of using the "Enter" key, try moving the cursor either by mouse or the appropriate "arrow" key. What is happening is that when you hit the enter key it is continuing with the highlighting that you established. You can break that trend with the cursor or arrow key.

Hope this helps.

If you take care to leave the paragraph end mark out of the selection before you highlight the final text in the paragraph, the highlighting won’t carry over to the next paragraph when you press the “Enter” key. The trick is to leave the paragraph end mark out of the selection, hence out of the highlighting.
But this is often rather difficult to achieve. You’ve got to be very precise with your mouse gestures. Otherwise, when Word gets to the last character before the paragraph end mark, it will automatically highlight the paragraph end mark too.
Workaround:
Use the mouse pointer to select the text that you want to highlight, in a left to right direction. Most likely, Word will automatically select the paragraph end mark too. But you don’t want that!
Leave the selection AS IS. Then, press and hold the Shift key down and hit the left arrow key once. This will deselect the paragraph end mark. Release the Shift key.
When this is done, apply the desired highlighting color to the remaining selection.

After this, the highlighting won’t carry over to the next paragraph when you press the “Enter” key.
