Multiple references to same note
In my text, I make multiple references to a same end note. However, when the first occurrence of the note changes (e.g. when a previous note is deleted), the references to this note do not change accordingly, but remain with the same number.
Is it possible to make the change automatic ? Thanks |

Do you have Track Changes turned on?
If you do, be advised that footnotes and endnotes will NOT be automatically renumbered until all changes affecting them (like your deletion of previous note) have been either accepted or rejected. That's just the way Microsoft Word works. |

“Track changes” is off, and presently footnotes and endnotes are correctly renumbered when a change is made (eg the removal of an early number in the list). What bothers me is the following (I propose an example below). Lets say that I introduce in the text a multiple reference to note 2 (here, it is the 2 green). If I delete note 1, note 2 correctly becomes note 1, but multiple reference 2 does not follow and remains 2 instead of becoming 1. Can this be overcome ? That would greatly help me as I am editing a paper. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit [1]. Sed non risus. It works fine when I do it.
Here's how I do it. (assuming recent version of Word with the Ribbon) To insert another reference to an existing endnote: In the Ribbon, choose References tab. In the Captions section, select Cross-Reference. In the Cross-Reference dialog box, select Reference type: Endnote, and select Insert reference to: Endnote number. Choose the endnote you want from the list below that. That will insert the endnote number. (Unfortunately, it's not superscripted; you'll have to do that manually. On the Ribbon, choose the Home tab and the Font section. Superscripting is there.) And when I deleted endnote [1], all the references to endnote [2] turned into endnote [1], and so on, for all the endnote renumbering. |

Thank you for your continuous interest in my question. However I have tried your suggestion, but cannot make it work. When I suppress endnote 1 or 2, cross reference 3 remains 3.

I don't know how to read the document you posted here.
Why don't you post your Microsoft Word example as an ATTACHMENT, and I'll read it into my copy of Word and see what happens. |

Friends have finally found the way to refresh the cross reference numbers. - click on the "control" tab - select the reference number you want to actualize - in the dialog box, select "mettre à jour les champs" ("update the domain" ?) - the actualization of the reference number is obtained. Anyhow, thank you for your continued interest in my question. Zone |
