Portuguese captions even when language set to English
I have recently been working on some documents translated to Portuguese. All If did was open them and work on formatting. I didn't change any settings. Today, I was trying to create a macro and discovered that captions are being suggested in Portuguese but not English. I am even wondering if that has something to do with my old macro not working....
I checked my Language preferences and it was set to "Match Microsoft Windows." I set it back to "English (Australian)," hoping that would solve my problem but it didn't. This is Word 2010, by the way. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you! Susan |

Check the language settings for the style Caption. Each style can have a different language setting.

I did not know that. Good knowledge to have, but it didn't seem to be the issue here. I have attached a picture. Any other ideas, folks? If you look at the caption that's small in the screenshot, it's Figura: 1

So in addition to the style setting, there can be a local formatting override. Are you saying that after you change the language to a paragraph it remains on Portuguese?

When I change the language of "Caption" to Australian English, the automatically inserted captions stay in Portuguese. I can make a new caption by clicking the New Label button and typing it in English.
So it wouldn't be a huge deal, but I think this issue may be causing a macro not to work and I can't get in and edit the macro because the guy who made them locked them down somehow. I can make a new one if I have to, but I'm afraid other macros won't work either, plus I just want to know what's going on! |

Make sure that "Detect language automatically" is cleared at Review | Language | Set Proofing Language. This is important, because it prevents Word from changing the language at the insertion point.
To more easily see which language is applied at the insertion point, you can display the language control on the status bar. Right-click the status bar and select the "Language" option on the context menu.

Re-reading your post, I'm wondering if you are asking about the caption label rather than the text (proofing) language?

Yes, it was the label.
Since I'm in Australia, it's Monday morning and when it was Friday there, it was Sat here and I was away from work. Now I've come back. And my computer updated. And everything is working fine. And the macros are working again. I did restart the computer last week to see if that would fix the problem, so I don't know what changed except the computer updating. I learned quite a bit from this experience, though. Thank you all. I'm going to look at that Reviewing language option, just so I'll know where it is for future reference. Thank you very much. |
