Question Difficulties with bullets in Word

Today, trying to edit a resume with bullet points, I had the following trouble:
- copy/pasted a letter from another document to use with the resume
- two of the bullet points in the resume moved over to the left 3 - 4 spaces
- tried tabbing those lines over
- tried highlighting and tabbing the whole list
- repeatedly tried adjusting list indents via context menu
- revealed formatting, saw that paragraph markers seemed to be okay
- tried typing on end of bullet point above to put wrapped text on the end of the point. It would type only so far and then jumped down
- highlighted the whole list and clicked increase indent, then decreased indent
- the three middle bullet points all of this time were unaffected, but the top and bottom points were jumping back and forth as I tabbed and then pressed ctrl-z
- deleted the offending bullet points and retyped. The same problem occurred with the new bullet points.
- cut one line of text out, deleted the bullet, put in a new bullet and pasted text back in. Same trouble.
*Problem seemed to be the line and not the bullet, like the right margin was set too short on that line only.
- checked paragraph formatting menu, page layout
- opened a new copy of the same resume, inserted a page and pasted in the letter. The bullets did the same thing again.
- eventually made it work, deleted the points entirely and retyped
- posted it into the Monster.ca job application
- looked at the posted resume after, and all of the bullets had jumped over uniformly and the text had jumped over further to the right by the same margin
I just wasted an entire afternoon trying to fix a couple of bullets. Next time, I'll just redo everything, but if anyone can give me any insight into WHY this happened and how to deal with it better, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Resumes are usually formatted using Tables.
