Grouping or ungrouping resets Wrapping style... why?
Windows 7, Office 2010.
Whenever I group or ungroup a figure in Word, the text wrapping is reset to "In front of text". I have "Top and bottom" selected as default, but this obviously doesn't impact this "feature" that changes the settings whenever I group or ungroup. I can of course change it at once (since the objects are all selected), but it's a hassle, and I would like to avoid doing it. Anybody have an idea how? As stated, default wrapping is already set, and doesn't affect this behaviour. |

It's quite possible the behaviour is because the grouped objects had that wrap format before they were grouped.

No, unfortunately. This happens every time I group or ungroup objects, regardless of wrapping style they had before. So a typical action for me is (if I have to change something in a grouped image for example) ungroup, right click (as all items are still selected after the ungroup action), set wrapping style to "top and bottom" (because it changed back to "in front of text"), do the modifications I need to do, regroup, set wrapping style to "top and bottom" (again, because it changed back to "in front of text").
I have done a little testing, and what I have found is the following: All objects (text boxes, rectangles, arrows etc., the kind of objects I normally use when making figures) have wrapping style "in front of text" when created, regardless of the default wrapping style. Even if my first action when creating an object is to change the wrapping style, it changes back to "in front of text" every time I group or regroup. Seems like this is some type of default behaviour that I at least haven't found a way to override... |

If all you're doing is adjusting items in the group, does it really matter that the wrapping Style changes when ungrouping? Simply ungroup, adjust, then re-group and your previous wrap format should return.

No, it doesn't. If I group, the "hidden default" wrapping style of "in front of text" is applied, and if I ungroup the same happens. So I have to apply wrapping style every single time I group or ungroup... I have now become so fed up with this that I have begun placing figures in separate documents, and do all modifications there, where there is no text in the way. This works kind of ok, but I am very curious why the h... I can't change this default behaviour, as it is very, very annoying...

I must admit that I don't understand the default behaviour, but I likewise don't understand your comment about "where there is no text in the way". If the wrap format changes to 'in front of text', that means the text goes behind the shapes and, so, can't be in the way. Granted, it may be visible behind the ungrouped shapes, but that has no effect on whatever re-arranging of the shapes you're doing.

The problem is that it's figures with lots of small bits and pieces (connection diagrams) with no fill in any of the shapes they're made of, and when they get smeared out over all the text, it's next to impossible to see what's what. I could of course use the bail-out option of having empty lines behind the figure, but somehow I stubbornly want Word to just do what I tell it, not what it thinks I should be doing...

Here's a couple of macros you could assign to keyboard shortcuts to do the grouping/ungrouping and applying the 'square' wrap format in one go:
Code:
Sub ReGroup() With Selection.ShapeRange .Group.Select .WrapFormat.Type = wdWrapSquare End With End Sub Sub UnGroup() With Selection.ShapeRange .UnGroup.Select .WrapFormat.Type = wdWrapSquare End With End Sub
