Default Microsoft Office 2007 File Validation

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me, this feature has been driving me crazy!

I'm trying to get Office File Validation to work for Word 2007,

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...ice.12%29.aspx

I've added the following key, and run gpupdate /force

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word \Security\FileValidation" /v "InvalidFileUIOptions" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

But I cant seem to get the prompt from Word to say the file I'm openning has failed validation. I am testing with a couple of Virus Word documents that hit my inbox. The PC is a VM that is off the network.

Does anyone have a Word doc that can give me that I can test with, to see if this feature is working correctly?

If not is there anyway to make a document that fails the office validation?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks
Tom

A virus-infected file won't necessarily fail file validation. File validation isn't a panacea - it only protects against certain kinds of attack and only with the older binary-format Office files, not the newer xml-format files. Are you sure the files concerned are of the kind that file validation is supposed to protect against?

Hi macropod,

Thanks for your reply. i wasnt actually sure what file validation actually did in terms of validating a document. I assumed a virus doc would set it off.

Do you have an example word document I could test with?

I just want to make sure Ive enabled file valudation, then I would be happy.

How can I test file validation is actually working?

Look forward to hearing from you.

I don't have any such files - or the knowledge to create one. In any event, given that validation is built in to Office 2010, such exploits are likely to be rare. If you've applied the registry patch correctly, I'm sure it will be effective.
