Major problems inserted images into Word
Hi all,
At the moment I am having major issues with inserted images into word. Background: it concerns my PhD thesis of about 140 pages. In this document I have inserted about 10-15 TIFF images. I had some resolution problems with the printout of my first draft, which made me decide to increase the resolution of my images and re-insert them into word. The images were made in Illustrator and then exported as TIFF images. Result: a word document that is very large (46 MB at the moment). The type of issue is different every moment, but here are some of the issues I have experienced: - instead of the image a white box with a small red cross inside and the message "This image cannot currently be displayed." However, when I close the document and re-open it, the image sometimes re-appears. But then, often a different image would have disappeared instead. So at any moment, there always are some pictures missing, whereas others are gone. - when inserting an image, it is downscaled (so not its real size). - when trying to re-insert the picture, just a white box is inserted without any message. Could anybody help me out? |

Word 2013's handling of graphics seems to be a problem but there are a couple of things you can be doing to reduce the problems you are having.
1. Try graphic formats other than TIFF. If your graphic is line & text based I would save it in PNG or EMF format. If your graphic is dominated by a photograph then save instead to a high quality JPG. These file formats will give you much smaller file sizes than TIFF and this will avoid some of Word's memory issues that are causing the display issues. 2. Images inserted into Word which are wider than the column they are being inserted into are automatically shrunk to fit that column width. You can resize it afterwards. |

Thanks for the feedback! I will try to your suggestion. However, I still find it rather strange, since I have a brand-new HP Pavillion 15, with 1.7 GHz and 8.00 GB Ram. When I open the same document on a Mac with similar settings, these problems do not occur! Could it be that my HP has some kind of virus causing this problem? I already did a scan but did not find anything. Otherwise this is really not acceptable, and maybe I should switch to Mac forever.

Just out of interest, why are you using Illustrator to make .tiff graphics? are you mixing raster and vector information?

EsoxL, your problem isn't a virus, it's that MS makes things as complex as possible. It's as if MS doesn't know how people put documents together. I used Mac's Appleworks for years, and just about any image could be dragged onto your desktop and then into your document wherever you wanted it and then floated or enlarged as desired with a stroke of the cursor. These tasks seem to require clicking on various tabs in Word. And any modified photos seem to revert to their original form without reason or warning. And then there is the question of adjusting line spacing in paragraphs, which I've yet to dope out.
