locking word table cells while auto-updating fields
Hi,
Got a wee problem, hope someone can help! Please see the attached word file. I've created a table inside a word doc, which contains two formulas. Both function perfectly. If I change any of the values in the peach coloured cells, all I have to do is right click / 'update fields' on both grey coloured cells containing the formulas, and it will update the values accordingly. However, I want users to input their own values into the peach coloured cells without having to right click / 'update fields'. Is there any way the formulas in the grey cells can automatically update after user input? I also want to lock/protect the grey cells so users cannot edit the formulas. Using excel sadly isn't an option. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.. |

You could achieve what you're after by using formfields for the data entry in column B, setting their 'calculate on exit' property, then applying forms protection to the document.
I note that you're using SUM(ABOVE) in the last row. You may want to reconsider that, as it is error-prone. For example, if you delete the numbers for 'green' and 'blue', then update the formulae, the last row's result will be wrong. With formfields, you could, of course, specify a numeric format with 0 defaults and that would obviate the problem.

ok, I've tried adding text form fields, but am having a problem populating these fields.
Please see attached. The values in red, yellow and green have been populated by double-clicking the text form field and populating the values in the pop-up dialogue box. But I don't want the users to do this. I simply want them to be able to click in the field and type the value. For Blue, I placed the cursor in the leftmost position in the field and typed, but this puts the value outside the field. When I simply click on the field and type (purple) the text form fields disappears and simply enters the number to the cell. I have design mode switched off. What am I doing wrong? Is there some kind of other setting or default I may have switched on/off which is preventing me from simply clicking in the field and typing? any help much appreciated. |

Your problems are because you haven't applied forms protection to the document. My previous post said you would need to do this. See under Developer|Restrict Editing|Editing Restrictions>Filling in Forms.
