Default "File" and "Edit" not in menu bar

This might sound simple, but "File" and "Edit" have disappeared from the menu bar in Word/ Office 2008 for Mac, and the Formatting Toolbar has vanished, with "View" > Toolbars, Customize Toolbars & Menus > reset not restoring any of the above.
The version I'm running is 12.0.0 on Mac OS 10.6.8.
Thanks for any help here!
